Re: Shoemaker, better CFS doctor than Dr. James Baranuik GU
Posted by JL on 3/08/08

    Erik,
I don't care if you are arrogant in a good way because that's ok with me!
I had seen the CFS specialist at Georgetown University, Dr. James Baranuik, he missed missed the
diagnosis of lyme disease, babesia and mild hypothyroidism. Most of the visit Dr. asked me about
childhood experiences, asked me if I had been sexually abused, ever been spooked or spanked. The
consultation offended me and made me uncomfortable.I thought I was in the wrong doctors office, I
felt like this was a psychiatric appointment instead of with an immunolgist! My symptoms were not
psychological,I was not depressed but he seemed to want to make it about mental health. My
symptoms were very physical and obvious at least to any doctor who would really listen to me but
he didn't. I think he has a psychological adgenda where women's health is concerned,he seemed
arrogant. but worse he didn't try to find out the cause of the pain and fatigue.
I am in agreement with you about a doctor finding out what is the cause of the illness it is far
more important than personality but personality can be a bonus.
After going to an internist, an endocrinologist and Dr.James Baranuik, I was getting nowhere. But
then a lucky break came my way when my husband had watched an episode of Mystery Diagnosis on the
Discovery Health Channel. My symptoms were almost identical to the patient on the show. I made an
appointment with the doctor who was on the show, Dr. Bernard Raxlen in Connecticut.Dr. Raxlen
diagnosed me with Lyme, Babesia and hypothyroidism.
Fast forward two years,I am better now. Dr. Raxlen is a wonderful doctor and I feel so lucky that
we found him.Erik you are lucky too to have found Dr. Shoemaker.
