Post: former employees personal rights

Former employer talked to an employees ex wife (that he had never met) and told her things that led her to file for sole custody of the employees son. He also told her where he was working. This employee is a recovering alcoholic and had been sober for 7 years. He went on a date thought he could have 1 drink after all that time and needless to say he couldn't. He called in sick the next day and the owner found out about it, wanted to demote him so he quit. He is now sober for 3 months. What can he do about this terrible employer legally?
