Post: Mold Remediation

Posted by Karen Bost on 5/10/06

My parents discovered a plumbing leak in their home in
April 05 - the insurance company hired a remediation firm
who did a VERY poor job. We live in North Carolina, which
according to my parent's insurance company, has put a
$5,000.00 cap on mold remediation and any expenses incurred
because of the mold (to include expenses incurred due to
loss of use of the home). The mold was in a closed off area
from the main house but the remediation company cross
contaminated the "clean" (meaning not involved in the
original mold problem) area with the "dirty" (meaning the
area involved in the original mold problem)area. The
Insurance company paid for all the clean up and did not
hold the remediation company liable for the cross
    contamination.
In cleaning up the "clean" area the remediation company
sprayed a "mystery" chemical on EVERYTHING. I put
everything in caps because I mean everything, walls,
carpet, furniture, linens, clothes, lamps, books,
EVERYTHING. The remediation company says they cleaned
everything that was sprayed with the mystery chemical. (My
mother last entered the house after the mystery chemical
    was cleaned up)

My parents are in their middle 70s and their house was
built in 1950. They have lived in their 40 foot motor home
since they left for Florida in October 2004.

They had a local attorney that did not conduct himself as
an advocate for my parents. Since they "fired" him
approximately 3 weeks ago they have spoken with 3 other
attorneys that couldn't take their case due to conflicts of
    interest.

My mother's health is deteriorating rapidly. The last time
she entered the home was August 2005. She ended up in the
emergency room unable to breath. She has since been
diagnosed as having permanate lung damage due to her
exposure to whatever was sprayed in the home. She does
have a doctor's statement that she is not to enter the home
    ever.

Can anyone offer me any advice as to how to help them?
